Your obligations, in plain English.
Both states put the responsibility on the center. Filters only protect children if they're the right type, fitted on every drinking tap and changed on time, and you need to be able to show it.
Every licensed childcare center
- Filters certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (particulates) and NSF/ANSI 53 (lead reduction) on every tap used for drinking or food preparation.
- Cartridges replaced on the manufacturer's schedule.
- A written drinking water management plan (due by January 24, 2025).
- Filtered water sampled and tested for lead every two years, and it must test at or below 5 parts per billion.
- Since October 24, 2025, water given to children must come from a filtered source. State grant funding for filters has ended, so ongoing cartridges and testing are the center's cost.
Licensed centers and homes serving children under 6
- All drinking and cooking water sources tested for lead, if the building was built on or before January 1, 2000.
- If any source shows lead at 2.01 parts per billion or more, the results and a mitigation plan go to your licensing office within 120 days.
- The plan stays in place until permanent fixes are made and two tests in a row come back below 2.01 ppb (retests within 6 and 12 months of completing the work).
- Certified point-of-use filters, changed on schedule, are a common part of a mitigation plan.
This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Your licensing consultant has the final word on what your center needs.
We take the routine work off your plate.

Good to know.
We already have filters from the Filter First grant. Do we need new ones?
Usually not. We identify your filters from photos and put the right replacement cartridges on a schedule. That's full care, at $99 a month.
Do we need a plumber every time a cartridge is changed?
Usually not. Most cartridges change by hand in a few minutes, and we send simple instructions for yours. A plumber is only needed to fit new filters, or for the rare filter that needs tools.
What will I have to show my licensing consultant?
Your drinking water plan, a log of every filter change and your lab results. We keep all three up to date and can send them to you at any time.
What happens if a test shows lead?
We tell you straight away, recommend the fix (often a filter or a fixture change), arrange a retest, and help with the paperwork if your state requires a mitigation plan.
Do you test for PFAS ("forever chemicals")?
Yes, as an option. PFAS-rated filters and certified PFAS lab tests can be added to your plan.
Is there a contract?
Cartridges only and full care are month to month. Rental plans run for 3 years, because that's how the filters come with no upfront cost, then renew yearly with a reminder 60 days before.
