What the rules require

Your obligations, in plain English.

Michigan requires filters on drinking taps. Several other states require regular lead testing and a fix when a tap tests high, and a certified filter is often the simplest fix.

Michigan · Filter First (2023 PA 154)

Public and nonpublic K-12 schools

  • Filters certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 on every tap used for drinking or food preparation, with cartridges replaced on schedule.
  • At least one filtered bottle filler or filtered faucet for every 100 students and staff.
  • A written drinking water management plan, due by January 24, 2025, and kept on site.
  • Filters in place by the end of the 2025–26 school year. Filtered water sampled every year, and any outlet above 5 parts per billion shut off and signed.
  • An annual Filter First certification filed with the state, first due August 31, 2026, backed by a fixture inventory.
New York · Public Health Law 1110

Public, BOCES and charter schools

  • Every drinking and cooking outlet tested for lead every three years. The current cycle runs 2026–28.
  • Any outlet above 5 parts per billion taken out of service and fixed, with results posted publicly.
Minnesota · Statute 121A.335

Public schools and childcare centers

  • Every fixture used for drinking or cooking tested at least every five years.
  • Any tap at 5 parts per billion or more must be fixed, and results reported to the state each year.
Vermont · Act 66

Schools and childcare

  • Every drinking and cooking tap tested every three years.
  • Any tap at 4 parts per billion or more taken out of service and fixed.

What Aerbrook does

We take the routine work off your facilities team.

What's requiredWhat Aerbrook does

Certified filters and bottle fillers✓We supply filters certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 and filtered bottle fillers to meet the 1 per 100 ratio. Licensed local plumbers fit them.
Cartridges replaced on time✓Replacements ship to each building before they expire. Your custodial staff change them and confirm each change with us, so it's logged.

Questions from schools

Good to know.

We fitted filters with grant money. Do we need new ones?

Usually not. We identify your filters from photos and put the right replacement cartridges on a schedule. That's the full care plan.

Our state only requires testing. Why filters?

When a tap tests high, it has to be taken out of service and fixed. A certified filter is often the quickest and cheapest fix, and it keeps the tap in use while you plan longer-term plumbing work.

Can you cover a whole district?

Yes. Each building gets its own inventory, schedule and records, with one contract and one invoice for the district.

Do you work with purchasing rules?

Yes. We give a written quote per building and can respond to a district's quote or bid process.

Do you test for PFAS ("forever chemicals")?

Yes, as an option. PFAS-rated filters and certified PFAS lab tests can be added to your plan.

Is there a contract?

Cartridges only and full care are month to month. Rental plans run for 3 years, then renew yearly with a reminder 60 days before.
